Massive Fire at Surat Shiv Shakti Textile Market

A massive fire broke out at Surat’s famous Shiv Shakti Textile Market, which is one of the biggest textile markets in the city. This market is home to thousands of shops and warehouses where fabrics and other flammable materials are stored in bulk. As soon as the fire started, flames quickly spread from one shop to another, creating chaos all around. The fire department rushed to the spot and worked hard for several hours to bring the situation under control. But shockingly, within less than a day, the fire flared up again, adding to the damage and panic.

More than 25 fire engines were sent to the market to douse the flames. However, the narrow lanes and the crowded setup of the market made it extremely difficult for the fire brigade to reach some areas. Many shops and storage units were completely destroyed as the fire rapidly spread across different floors. Shop owners, workers, and local residents tried to save as much stock as possible, but the fierce flames left them helpless. Traders also complained that the market lacked a proper fire hydrant system, which delayed the firefighting efforts even further. This lack of basic safety measures became a major challenge for the rescue teams.

People living nearby and those present at the scene said that thick black smoke covered the entire area. It became hard to see or even breathe, making the work of firefighters and rescue teams even more challenging. Initial reports indicate that a short circuit might have triggered the fire, but officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause. Many questions are being raised about why regular fire safety checks were not conducted and why authorities ignored such an important aspect in a market that handles highly flammable materials every day. This is not the first time that a fire incident has happened in this market. Previous fires have also exposed major gaps in safety rules and their enforcement.

The financial loss caused by this fire is estimated to be in the range of several crores of rupees. For many small and medium-sized traders, this market was their only source of income. Years of hard work, savings, and investments were reduced to ashes in just a few hours. Local traders’ associations have strongly demanded immediate compensation and a proper financial relief package from the government. They are also urging the authorities to review and upgrade the fire safety systems in the market so that such disasters can be prevented in the future.

Overall, this tragic incident at Surat Shiv Shakti Textile Market has once again brought attention to the urgent need for better fire safety infrastructure, stricter rules, and better disaster management plans. It has left hundreds of families in deep financial trouble and raised serious questions about the accountability of market authorities and local administration. If these issues are not addressed soon, similar tragedies could happen again in Surat’s textile markets, putting lives and livelihoods at risk. Proper fire safety is no longer optional — it is a necessity that cannot be ignored any longer.
